I always tell my students and advisees that they should think like investors, not employees. For example, as a professional you invest into the learning curve and relationships. In addition, as capitalist/entrepreneur/executive you build equity. Now I realize that this approach leads to a tremendous and growing(!) inequality because a large majority of people don't have jobs that allow for meaningful investment. This is a real problem because the return on labor is falling, while the return on capital, esp. intangible assets, is growing.
