"And in the 1980s, for example, the biggest conflict in the Middle East was between two Shia-majority countries — Iran and Iraq — with Sunni powers backing Iraq."

In 1979–1980, anti-Ba'ath riots arose in the Iraq's Shia areas by groups who were working toward an Islamic revolution in their country.[53] Saddam and his deputies believed that the riots had been inspired by the Iranian Revolution and instigated by Iran's government.[43] On 10 March 1980, when Iraq declared Iran's ambassador persona non-grata, and demanded his withdrawal from Iraq by 15 March,[64] Iran replied by downgrading its diplomatic ties to the charge d'affaires level, and demanded that Iraq withdraw their ambassador from Iran.[53]
Iraq soon after expropriated the properties of 70,000 civilians believed to be of Iranian origin and expelled them from its territory.[65] Many, if not most, of those expelled were in fact Arabic-speaking Iraqi Shias who had little to no family ties with Iran.
"Things first began to change in 2003, when the United States led the invasion of Iraq to topple Saddam Hussein.
Obviously, Iraqis were aware of Sunnism and Shiism before 2003, and those distinctions were not totally irrelevant to Iraqi life. But for much of Iraq's modern history, Sunni and Shia lived peacefully side by side in mixed neighborhoods and frequently intermarried. "
Many of the people killed were buried in mass graves.[14] Mass burial sites containing thousands of bodies have been uncovered since the fall of Saddam Hussein in April 2003.[30] Of the 200 mass graves the Iraqi Human Rights Ministry had registered between 2003-2006, the majority were in the South, including one believed to hold as many as 10,000 victims. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1991_uprisings_in_Iraq#Southern_uprisings

Is this some kind of a joke?
